Mound House
Marfa, Texas
Built in the context of Donald Judd’s Marfa, this 2,600 square foot single-family house makes use of a traditional building material—adobe bricks—together with steel-spanning frames to create a contemporary courtyard residence. The design maximizes the spatial qualities of steel with flexible gallery and living areas, anchored by the kitchen, oriented north with a view through the “V” courtyard. In the more private areas, smaller window openings and diffused skylight and clerestory windows create intimate sleeping spaces.
Project undertaken while associated with Johnston Marklee.
Project completed in 2002.
